Spray Foam Roofs
Spray foam roofs, protected by polyurea.
Spray foam gives a roof insulation value and slope. It cannot sit bare in the sun. A polyurea surface protects the foam so it can do its job.
Overview
Spray Foam Roof Coating with Polyurea
Spray polyurethane foam is the insulation layer. On its own it breaks down in sunlight, so it always needs a protective coating. Polyurea makes a tough, seamless skin over the foam that stands up to weather, hail and maintenance traffic.
Existing foam roofs can often be restored. Damaged or wet foam is cut out and replaced, the surface is cleaned, and a new polyurea coating goes on. On new work, foam and coating are applied as one system.
Why polyurea
Why it works here.
Shields the foam
The coating keeps sun and water off the insulation layer.
Takes foot traffic
Polyurea is tougher underfoot than most acrylic or silicone topcoats.
Easy to maintain
Damage can be cut out, refilled with foam and re-sprayed.
Process
Most of the work happens before the spray gun comes out.
-
01
Inspect and assess
A trained applicator walks the roof, checks for trapped moisture, tests adhesion on the existing surface and looks at drainage, flashings and penetrations. You get a written scope for your roof.
-
02
Prepare the surface
Loose material comes off. Wet or failed areas are cut out and replaced. Fasteners, seams and cracks are repaired, the surface is cleaned, and the right primer goes down for the substrate.
-
03
Detail, then spray
Drains, curbs, vents and edges are detailed first. Then the polyurea is sprayed with heated plural-component equipment into one continuous, fully adhered membrane at the specified thickness.
-
04
Topcoat and check
Where the roof sees direct sun, a UV-stable topcoat goes on if the system calls for one. The crew checks film thickness, walks every detail and cleans up.
-
05
Keep it maintained
Clear drains, keep traffic off where it does not belong and book a periodic inspection. Small damage can be cleaned and re-sprayed in place instead of tearing anything off.
Is the polyurea adding insulation?
No. Polyurea is not insulation. The insulation value comes from the foam underneath.
Can my old foam roof be saved?
Often. If most of the foam is dry and sound, damaged areas are replaced and the roof is recoated.
Does ArmorThane make spray foam?
Yes. ArmorThane makes the ArmorFoam spray foam line as well as polyurea coatings, so foam and coating can come from one manufacturer.
